Hi, I came across this while I was googling. Thanks so much for the article, it helped me a lot and I realized I might have to start worrying now. I'm a sophomore, and I have a 4.3 GPA so far (4.5 scale). Do I need to pull it up even higher? I take 1 AP class and 3 honors classes. I'm in MUN, Key Club, and two other clubs that focus on helping middle school kids learn English & fit in at school. I go to a very competitive American international school in Asia. What are my chances of acceptance into Stanford? A week from now I'll have to decide if I want to be involved in the IB diploma program or the AP. I've heard that many American universities do not yet recognize (or give full credit for) the IB diploma. Is this true for Stanford as well?

So.. out the $30+ + the 2 1/2 hours wasted on the phone. Great business model they have there. I'll make sure to run out and buy more of this type of stuff!!

Wow, this was posted over 5 years ago-- how are people still finding this post AND not getting the tongue-in-cheek nature of this? I approve such "less than nice" comments in the spirit of free speech, but before you haters post, do you bother to read previously posted comments? Especially the comment at http://sindylee.com/2006/02/05/racist-snack-foods/#comment-120439844 where I'm forced to point out that this was a tongue-in-cheek comment on political correctness and the way we use words.

Besides, if you don't understand the difference between a slang word for a private body part ("nip" for nipples, which isn't really sexist since news flash: men have nipples too) and a racial slur, well, then I suppose I can see how you totally missed the tone of my original post. But what should I expect from someone who chooses such a clever, poetic handle like "URTARDED"?

And on that note, I leave you with this Cheese Nip reference from Secret Asian Man: http://secretasianmancomics.blogspot.com/2011/04/asian-response-part-4.html.

This is probably the dumbest most over-reaching attempt to make something out of nothing I have read in quite awhile. You should be ashamed of yourself for even trying to construct a story around something so spurious. "OMG 'nip' is also short for nipples, maybe the food is also sexist as well as racist?!?!"

[...] They have been working (presumably in stealth mode) for three years not on the product, but the “website to make and sell this product.” Their secret, but “great product” with “huge potential demand” that, despite reading the description several times, I still can’t seem to even narrow down what kind of product it is. Is it software, a website? Is it some type of health or beauty product (they mention that it can be an add-on for AVON)? Or is it some type of wireless media since they mention Verizon and AT&T as well as digital TV? Sounds more like a random list of key words and phrases for SEO. Or like the confusing rhetoric from IdeaFarm. [...]

While the connection to "Nips" as a racial slur may be "way out there" to you and many others as it's not as well known as "nigger" or "spic," but it's still an actual racial slur (maybe not as well known, but still as real as "jap," "chink" or "gook"). The question "Is it just me or is it bizarre..." is *rhetorical*... The actual existence of Cheese Nips, including the peculiar quality of their name, was actually pointed out to me by a group of American American friends when I first moved to California and since then, has been mentioned to me on more than one occasion-- i.e., <i>people notice</i>. Do I seriously think they're racist and mean to use "nips" as a slur? No. It was a slightly *tongue-in-cheek*, random, brief comment on the many different ways we all use words. Better use for my time? You're the one who found this post and took the time to actually comment, which all took probably way more time than I spent writing the post or even thinking about this whole issue in general. The only reason I'm spending more time now is that I can't believe this post has actually attracted any comments, "heated" or otherwise, and that I've somehow become the top Google result for "racist snack."

Maybe we should better channel our concern over snack foods and racism to more glaring examples: http://guyism.com/2009/10/the-10-most-racist-food-products-ever.html. However, you may think even "Gookie" shouldn't qualify.

Sorry to inform you, but it's just you. Ya wanna talk about really racist snack foods? My mother (born 1923) remembers when she was a child that Brazil nuts were referred to as "nigger toes". Now THAT is racism. The connection you're trying for (and failing at) with the Cheese Nips is just way out there. And another thing: you don't see Proctor and Gamble changing the name of its Spic and Span product in these oh-so-PC times now, do you? Of course not! You need to find a better use for your time.

Kids, kids, kids. Read what Sindy has to say. She wrote it so nicely, and so many of you are just not listening to her. If you can't write an articulate, coherent post on this blog without half a dozen errors, you certainly can't write a compelling enough essay to get in. If you've gotten a few B's and C's in high school, you are not going to get in. If you are not a STANDOUT in your extra-curricular activities, you are not going to get in. And if your SAT scores are not above 2200, you are not going to get in. Thanks for a good writeup Sindy.

Hi, thanks for the good info. I am trying my very best to get into stanford. i know about all the extracurricular activities, teacher recs, and essays (all the uniqueness), including my SAT score. Beside all that, for now, i am only concerned about my grades. My average GPA is 4.1. i have taken many A.P. classes (mainly junior and senior year), my freshmen year grades were fine, and my junior and senior grades were all A's. However....once i look at my sophomore grades (first semester) i had 2 C's and mostly B's except for my electives. That semester, my gpa ended up being a 3.0. Second semester wasn't a problem, i got all A's. I'm guessing this shows progress, however my concern is that once stanford looks over my application, then my transcript, once they see those 2 C's, will their reaction be negative and throw my application aside?

I am trying my very best to get into stanford. i know about all the extracurricular activities, teacher recs, and essays (all the uniqueness), including my SAT score. Beside all that, for now, i am only concerned about my grades. My average GPA is 4.1. i have taken many A.P. classes (mainly junior and senior year), my freshmen year grades were fine, and my junior and senior grades were all A’s. However….once i look at my sophomore grades (first semester) i had 2 C’s and mostly B’s except for my electives. That semester, my gpa ended up being a 3.0. Second semester wasn’t a problem, i got all A’s. I’m guessing this shows progress, however my concern is that once stanford looks over my application, then my transcript, once they see those 2 C’s, will their reaction be negative and throw my application aside?

This is just dumb. Just because they use the word "nip" doesn't mean it is racist. "Cracker" is slang for a white person. Are cheese crackers racist? NO. Sorry.

I go to a poorly-funded public school that has literally no extracurricular activities. I am taking all Honors and hard classes and making good grades and I volunteer at the zoo. Is there anything else I can do to help with extracurriculars?

I don’t know what Stanford thinks of specific schools and I don’t think whether a school is public or private matters, but that’s only my guess since Stanford doesn’t publish that kind of information. Instead, national rankings are probably a good place to start. Check out US News & World Report’s high school rankings at: http://www.usnews.com/sections/education/high-schools.

How could one find out what high schools Stanford looks highly upon?

Would it be better for me to attend a public high school that offers the IB program, or a private Catholic high school? (The exact decision I will have to make this coming spring.)

Thanks for your input.

It sounds like you are on the right track, working towards improving your grades, your courseload and extracurriculars.

As I said in my post, there's no minimum requirements necessarily and I can't exactly tell you what your chances are, but again, check out the profile of admitted freshmen and transfers: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/basics/selection/profile.html. I don't know why they don't advertise this page more, but it will help with many of your questions. If you look at the profile for the Freshmen Class 2009, you'll see that the number of applications has now risen to over 30,000 and the acceptance rate has dropped to 7.9%. Based on these numbers, I do think that it has become more competitive than when I originally wrote this post in 2005.

There's no specific grade/GPA requirement. There is a general pattern, so you should review the profile of accepted students at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/uga/basics/selection/profile.html. As they say though, they consider an applicant's entire application when considering so admission, so you shouldn't judge your chances of being accepted only on grades, test scores or any singular criterion.

As for weighted GPAs, I believe Stanford does accepted them, although they may ask for both weighted and un-weighted. (In the end, the thing to remember is that they do take into account whether your high school course load was challenging.) Of course, to be sure and for more details, you should contact the <a href="http://admission.stanford.edu/" rel="nofollow">admissions office</a>.

Hi, thank you so much for the helpful post.

I'm a freshman currently. I was wondering if it is direly necessary to receive all A's in high school. I got two B's last semester (both in honors classes). How big of an effect is it? Do I still have a chance if I show improvement and take challenging courses?

Also, does Stanford not accept weighted GPA's?

Hi,

I just thought I'd let you know that his truck has been down at Terminal Blvd. in Mountain View quite a bit lately. I think I first saw it a month or so ago. (I work nearby at a small business.) I finally decided to check it out on line today. I'd never heard of this guy or his website before seeing his truck down here. I frankly think it's a little weird. I live in San Leandro, and for years there was this guy who parked a similar truck, albeit with a different but clearly crank message, in front of city hall for years. So my B.S. detector is on full alert. Nevertheless, it's quite possible his intentions are good, which I assume is being a voice in the wilderness crying out for folks to look after something other their own ass of their own volition: libertarian socialism, in a sense. Not such a bad thing.

hey, first of all, thanks for the post, that was really helpful, I'm french and even though the system here is very different than in the usa, it's my dream to study in an Ivy League university, preferably Stanford. I'm in Première S ("scientific 1 grade" with option engineering and spanish), i have very good marks (average of 17/20). I play the piano and tennis and I've been class representative for 4 years. do you think it is possible for me to study in Stanford?

hey

I am a sophmore at notre dame academy and have a gpa of 3.5. Ok that is the worse part. Notre dame is one of the hardest high schools in the state. A religous school. I am in tennis, fencing, and the ski club. I am soon to be an eagle scout, and am 50% Peruvian even though I don't look like it. Also I am in the most difficult classes in school and will be taking international bachaloriate (IB) junior and sinor year. My dad went there as a student and he met my mom a secritary at stanford. Do I have what it takes to get in to stanford?? Sorry about any mistakes, this was typed on my iPod touch.

I am a sophmore at notre dame academy and have a gpa of 3.5. Ok that is the worse part. Notre dame is one of the hardest high schools in the state. A religous school. I am in tennis, fencing, and the ski club. I am soon to be an eagle scout, and am 50% Peruvian even though I don’t look like it.

Hey,
I'm a senior in high school. I'm from India.
I dont think my extra curriculurs are particularly great. Though the social work I've one is very unique.
My SAT scores definitely fall in range.
So, for someone like me, are the essays that which will make or break my application?

Mexicali is a town in Mexico in northern Baja, but it is still used by some in a derogatory way. Check out <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=mexicali" rel="nofollow">definitions for and use of Mexicali in the Urban Dictionary</a>.

I am really insipired by your comments about the Stanford. Also, I would like to know more about the college and it's admission requirements. I know that I should consult a professional, but I want a personal advice from you,as you have been graduated from there and know about the enviornment and academics very well.

And software companies wonder why their products are pirated so widely. Who wants to pay for these headaches?

People who pirate software don't have to bother with this at all. My company buys many Adobe products, for instance, and before you can use your software, that you paid for, you're treated with suspicion, accused of software piracy and must prove your innocence, if you wish to get any work done.

Again, software pirates are unburdened with that, only paying customers are treated so.

Whats wrong with this picture?

You should try the Leninade! You can even mix it with vodka and make a "Commie Kaze". Also there are messages in the bottle caps; you don't know what you're missing... try it out and you'll say that it was "Better Than Expected" you can trust me; I'm someone who stumbled upon your site while googling Leninade!

Hi.
My kids and I are in Canada, following the tragic events in Asia.
The kids asked about donating to the Red Cross, which prompted a friend of ours to also donate. This prompted me to attach a web page of donation sites to my web site.
I hope this resource helps.

Hi,

Iam Vamsi, Came across this link accidently while browsing the net and it caught my eye. I felt I could share my views about itso here it goes... I read the article in NY Times about Pctvt and was smitten by the thought that actually something was finally being done to reduce the digital divide. I feel strongly about what Sindy says, we need to focus on the basic problems of people on the other side of the digital divide and PCtvt could be the first step towards it. PCtvt attempts to provide services (Information (about health care too) and entertainment(primary reason why people would want a PCtvt as in rural India even the poorest of poor would buy a tv first if he had enough money, for him entertainment is important!)). PCtvt can facilitate literacy programs(online), provide employment opportunities (PCtvt kiosks and trainers, takes care of means to earn bread) and mostly empowers, giving the edge of being digitally literate (one can use a system without being scared of something going wrong).
Bottom Line - Its a noteworthy effort and a first step towards greater good, lets not be too critical about it. Instead focus needs to be on, thinking of ways to address their basic needs and if technology can help then why not? The PCtvt usability study can perhaps determine how the users are using or not using PCtvt, what is that people need and how could technology(PCtvt) facilitate that(literacy, food, water, clothes r fine but there must be a way to get to them). Also, one relevant issue that Sindy talked about is that the digital divide has different sense in different communities. Cultures do determine how people use technology. Lot of work has gone into dealing with ethnogrphic issues (particularly Intel) perhaps a 'mega-project' like PCtvt could benefit from such work.

If you look at the financial reports of Government of India. Laying connectivity takes 1 % of what it takes to lay highways. There are villages in India where people are not aware of the services and funds they get from the government because there is not connectivity between them and the rest of the world. I am one of the membera in the PCtvt Team and we did a three year study in the rural backdrop of India to come up with such a device.

I sincerely suggest you to come to India and see the stage for pilot study to understand the details about this mega-project.

regards,
Prasanna Rambhatla

Ahh... topically-indexed blogs... so refreshing...

Yeah, sadly, my reaction to The Passion was sadly not a greater sense of "Jesus is Lord!" so much as it was, "Damn... those Romans were vicious!" =I

Randomness! Fancy finding this blog.

I am struggling with some of the same crap *right now*. However, I should not have "announced" to some people in my church that "I do not think I am currently a Christian." That was possibly honest but probably not the best way to be understood. =8

Ms. Sindy,

You think that your loss is only your own. That you feel alone, it cuts so deeply. Beauty is seen but never held.

a man knows nothing of the expectation of size.

if you were to be so unattractive, why, would she turn away, only to cry into a warm cup of tea, just to wonder, where all the 'good ones' are.

not that you will ever notice, or
