Public Restroom Mirror of Affirmation: An Unfortunate Series of Events (a photo essay)
- When I got into the office on Monday morning, I was greeted by these Post-It shenanigans on my monitor (and yes, that reads #sorryimnotsorry because even on paper, we use hashtags in Silicon Valley). Nice cheerful start to the morning, right?
- Then, I walked into the women’s restroom around noon and found these Post-Its along around the mirror…
- “Be your own valentine all year round!”
(Thinking: Okay, maybe just a stupid thing some sappy girl did for Valentine’s Day…)
- “Smile ☺ You Are L♥ved!”
(Rather than a public restroom, seems like a daily affirmation more appropriate to have on the mirror in your own private home— you know, the one into which you say, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and doggone it, people like me.”— but okay, it’s still a nice sentiment…)
- “Bring one of these Post-Its to someone who needs it!”
(Yeah, that’s not going to happen— I don’t do chain letters, even if they’re on Post-Its…)
- “Be so happy that when others look at you they become happy too.”
Okay, now you’re just being unreasonable.

“If you could change one thing about adults, what would it be?”
“I’d give them more money.”
“Yeah. Some of them don’t even have money to buy food.”

“2LEGIT” Combo— buttermilk fried chicken & belgian waffle with collard greens & mac ‘n’ cheese.
Maybe it’s because I was in desperate need of some comfort food, but OK, I’m sold on at least The Waffle Roost food truck setting up shop once in awhile in front of my apartment complex. It wasn’t really “hipsters ironically slumming it chic” like I was afraid it might be; it was more just families and single people alike in my apartment complex (which is huge with many buildings, making a lot of people “neighbors”) grabbing a quick and convenient dinner.
But I feel like that cartoon chicken is somehow racist, ah say, ah say. And I wonder how many people actually get the M.C. Hammer reference day-to-day?
(By the way, I didn’t have MTV growing up, so I had no idea until now that the full length music video for that song is 10 minutes long, the first four of which is this whole dramatic sequence with James Brown?! AND thanks again to the Internet, I ALSO learned today that the whole music video was actually a dance-off challenge to Michael Jackson for his sequined glove! What the… .?!)
Whatever. Nom nom nom.
(Ha ha, a Foghorn Leghorn
reference— and another example of a cartoon chicken that I’m not quite sure is all that politically correct…)

Old School Cassette Tape phone cover (as promised), also by TrekCovers via TrekGear via Amazon.
The size is actually not that off, but the dimensions are— of course, anybody born after 1990— the oldest of whom should be already reaching 25 this year— won’t know the difference.

My friend Sean, whose younger sister went to the same dance school/studio I went to (albeit many years after me— shout out to Wendy Cutting Dance Studio alum!), told me about this video of contemporary dance moves and I was dying laughing even then— now that I’ve seen it, I’m laughing even harder.
Anybody who has studied contemporary and/or even more “traditional” modern dance or maybe just watched more than one Lady Gaga music video will most certainly appreciate it. I was already finding myself giggling to myself at times from what Sean briefly told me about the video— I’m sure it will only get worse (better?) now. Enjoy!

Just when you think the world can’t be full of any more assholes, I come into the office to find this on my monitor. Thanks Tiffany— if people only knew how the smallest things can make or break a person’s morning, day, week, whatever.
And I can use it to try to stop the NSA from spying on me…

I give up: I’m not really sure how I feel about this weird smells-like-hipster-irony thing my apartment complex started a few months ago by having weekly food trucks in front of the main office/building during dinner time, but come January 14th, I don’t think I will be able to continue to resist chicken and waffles parked in front of my house.

My family doesn’t really do gifts (other than the very efficient, oh-so-very-stereotypical-for-valid-reason Asian and straight-to-the-point cold hard cash) and we’ve all been/still are on tight budgets anyway, but once in a while, I’ll treat myself to something small, like my sweet new retro Nintendo game controller-like phone cover by TrekCovers via TrekGear on Amazon. They have ones that actually look exactly like old school game controllers for various generations of game console controllers and handheld gaming devices like the original Gameboy, but I just liked the design and colors of this one.
Pops, doesn’t it?
Soga Wireless on Amazon is another favorite cell phone case source of mine and even though standard shipping (3-5 days) is $2.94 PER ITEM— $8.94 for “Expedited” (1-3 days) shipping!— when almost all the covers (at least for my phone) are literally $1-3, some being high as $4.99 (but those often come with a mini touch screen stylus that conveniently has a little lanyard-like thing that plugs into your phone’s stereo jack to make it easier to carry around), that still makes each cover only $4-6 each, well over 50% less than the average cell phone case/cover if you were to walk into a store to buy one.
Whether it’s $5 with Soga Wireless or $9.99 with TrekGear (free shipping!), just $5-10 can bring a surprising amount of “shopping satisfaction” AND it makes me feel like I have a new phone every time I change the cover, staving off the unnecessary and potentially very expensive itch to get a new smartphone that hits most technophiles at least every 12 months (and Apple’s bonkers iPhone release schedule and ads don’t exactly help the situation).
I’ll break out the old school cassette tape-like cover soon…

Only took 3 days to make (sort of— most of that time is waiting for the fresh ginger + sugar base “marinate” in the fridge), but now I can mix & heat up Mommy’s ginger tea at the office— that little 12 oz (1.5 cup) Martinelli’s bottle of concentrated tea will easily yield at least 3 big mug-fulls of yummy tea for both health and comfort. Will post recipe soon.

Happy New Year All! Too bad I never want to crawl out of this lovely cocoon, bundled up inside one of my favorite blankets I brought back from NY. My grandmother originally brought it with her when she immigrated from Korea— you can maybe make one, but definitely can’t buy a blanket like this in America.
