Synergy

There’s something that feels particularly great when you go through the same regular beauty ritual/maintenance you always do and it all comes together particularly well– hair color and blow dry come out just right, nails polished without any smudges or streakiness.

Not bad for middle-aged and no makeup, huh? 😉

(Cross-color effect applied for color correction– everything originally looked more reddish than it real life– but otherwise, no editing/touch ups/airbrushing, no makeup, and not even a drop of hair product, I promise.)

Power Tie for the Engineer

Stumbled on this awesome scarf with a rendering of the rotors that made up both the Enigma A and Enigma G machines from World War I!

And no, I didn’t get it because of the recent release of The Imitation Game (haven’t even seen it yet, but more on that later).

Available at Shana Logic, I love that this pashmina-style scarf is not only super soft, but also subtle in its geekiness (most folks will probably just see it has a white pattern or picture on a black background). Given its homage to the genius of Sir Alan Turing and the rest of Hut 8, I might start rocking this scarf like an engineering power tie.

Historic

That word was used a lot this morning and certainly felt appropriate as we celebrated the first graduating class of the Code.7370 program at San Quentin. After getting to know the students over the last few months and hearing the speakers this morning, I certainly felt that I was witnessing something very special. With the added buzz of the press and tech industry players, the energy in the room made me feel like this really was an historic event, not just because of its uniqueness, a bright blip in the massive criminal justice system that most people pay little real attention to, but because it was the start of something big.

Amazing things like this require impressive collaboration and hard work and in this case, it was by The Last Mile, Hack Reactor, CALPIA, San Quentin Prison, and most importantly, the 16 inspiring incarcerated men who received their certificates today. I am extremely lucky to have been a tiny part of this tremendous effort and look forward to continuing to mentor, watching the program continue to thrive and grow at San Quentin, throughout California and beyond, and again, most importantly, seeing the students and graduates gain not just valuable skills, but hope, self-confidence, and the power to, in their own words, “change the trajectory of their lives”.

Like I keep saying, a small group of passionate people can change the world.

Trouble waiting to happen…

Once again, pleasantly surprised by the mysterious gift Hired said they would be sending earlier this week. The first time they sent along a bottle of Dom; this time it’s a (minidrone)[http://ift.tt/1hKjSTJ]!

The box says for both indoor and outdoor use— i.e., trouble just waiting to happen.

Congratulations to Hired on their 2-year anniversary!
